Summer can be an uncomfortable time for pets. You can help keep your pets safe with these summer safety tips:

6 Tips for Keeping Pets Safe in Summer

1. Don’t Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car

Don’t leave your pet in a parked car for even a second. Not even with the air conditioner running. On hot days, temperatures in a car rise to dangerous levels. Even with the windows open, temperatures can quickly rise to 102 degrees in just 10 minutes. Your pet could suffer heat stroke , organ damage, or worse.

And as you prepare to travel for summer vacation, don’t forget to refer to our tips for traveling with pets.

2. Keep an Eye on Humidity

Arkansas is humid…please remember to keep an eye on the humidity. If the humidity is too high, pets are unable to cool themselves and their temperatures quickly soar to dangerous levels. A dog’s temperature should not go higher than 104 degrees.

3. Limit Exercise

Be careful when exercising your pet in the summer. Adjust the duration and intensity according to the temperature. On extremely hot days, try to limit exercise to the early morning or later evening hours. Be particularly careful with dogs with white-colored ears who are susceptible to skin cancer.

Also, be careful with short-nosed pets who struggle with breathing. Asphalt gets extremely hot and can burn paws, so try to walk your dogs on grass and carry water with you to avoid your pet dehydrating.

4. Don’t Leave it to a Fan

Pets respond a lot differently to heat than humans. Fans don’t cool them off as effectively as they do people.

5. Provide Water and Shade

Anytime your pet is outdoors, you should make sure they are protected from the sun and heat and have plenty of fresh water to drink. During heat waves, add ice to the water to keep it cool. Tarps and tree shade are ideal solutions to shade as they will not obstruct airflow. A doghouse or kennel won’t provide relief from the heat – in fact, it retains the heat.

6. Keep Your Pet Cool Inside and Out

You can keep your pet cool and occupied with quick and easy DIY frozen treats. Use items like peanut butter, mashed pumpkin, and other favorites. Always make sure your pet has access to water, both inside and outside.

To keep your pet from overheating, use a cooling body wrap, cooling collar, mat, vest, or damp towel. Soak the products in cool water and they will keep cool for a few days at a time. If your dog enjoys the water, try to get him or her to take a cooling soak in a small pool or even the bathtub.

Treat Your Pet for Heatstroke

If you suspect that your pet is suffering from heatstroke, get him or her into an air-conditioned area as soon as possible. Apply cold towels to the neck, chest, and head, or run cool water over the body. Allow your pet to drink small amounts of water or even lick an ice cube. Remember the Language Barrier

Perhaps one of the best pieces of training advice we can offer a new dog owner is to remember your puppy doesn’t speak English. It takes a long time for dogs to begin understanding that the words you are speaking to them have meaning. The best way to train a dog to understand what you are asking of them is to shorten your command to a single word. Rather than, “sit down, Spot,” a simple, “Sit”, will suffice. Similarly, “Go to bed,” is better as, “bed”, and so on.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

This tip goes along with the language barrier advice, as your pet is more likely to understand your actions than words. Therefore, be prepared to reward your dog for a job well done, even if they don’t get it on the first try. For example, if you ask your dog to sit, be prepared to reward him, even if the sit only occurs momentarily. If you ask your dog to stay, reward immediately, and onward from the command of, “Stay”. Your pet will come to realize that the word you are saying has a connection to this action, and that action is going to provide a treat.

Positive Reinforcement is Best

For example, if your dog runs toward the street, you want him or her to stop immediately when called and return to you. This trick far outweighs “roll over”. To ensure your dog responds to your prompts you want to keep training positive. What does this mean? Rather than punishing a dog for pooping on the floor, you want to praise him or her when they get the pee-pad or sit at the door to let you know they want out. You never want your dog to assume that you are shouting their name will result in something negative, or your pet may not turn around when it matters most.

Little Rock Veterinarian Tips for Keeping Small Pets Safe During Fireworks

If you have small pets, such as rabbits and birds, make sure you place their cages or hutches indoors in a quiet room, shed or garage.
Provide extra bedding for your pet so it feels snuggly and safe.
If you’re unable to bring your pet’s cage or hutch inside, turn the enclosure around to face a fence or wall instead of an open gate.

On the surface, it may, but there are many reasons why buying pet medication online is potentially risky. Read on to find out why you should visit your vet instead of purchasing your pets’ medications online.

Reason #1: Online Pet Med Dealers May Be Operating Illegally

While it’s true that there are some legitimate online veterinary pharmacies, there are scores more operating illegally. You travel with your pet, ensure that your pet is always wearing a collar with tags that has their name and your mobile phone number on them, as well as a microchip ID. A pet ID microchip is a tiny, passive electronic chip that is placed under the pets’ skin.

Traveling long distances with your pet will either mean an extended time in the car or extended time in a pet carrier. Make some time to do some practice runs, especially if your pet is not familiar with the travel carrier or hasn’t been on car rides outside of those to the vet or groomer.

Most travel pet carriers come in two pieces, so if your pet seems unsure about the carrier as a whole, set up the bottom half with their bedding, favorite toys, and even treats to get them more comfortable with the idea. Once they have been acclimated to the bottom portion, add the top, and leave the door open. You may be surprised to find your pet choosing to sleep in their new “den” instead of their bed (or even yours)!

Make some shorter trips in the car with your pet, even simply around your neighborhood to start with if they are especially anxious. Offer treats and praise during the ride. As they become more comfortable, take longer trips.

Gear Up

You’ll want to pack some essential comforts of home for your pet as you would for yourself. Invest in travel water and food bowls, bring favorite toys, and if you are flying, consider putting a shirt of yours in their crate to give them a comforting piece of home on the go.

Be sure you have a strong leash and harness, even if your pet is usually easygoing – the changes and excitement of travel may send them bolting, and you’ll want to keep them secure.

Check the Rules and Fees

While many airlines, hotels, and even destinations like beaches and trails often have pet-friendly accommodations, many of them also have fees and specific pet policies. Be sure you are aware of how your pet will travel if going by plane, and what sort of fees and policies will be enforced by your hotel.

Going on a road trip? Remember that your pet will want to get up and stretch their legs every so often. Traveling with pets is not unlike traveling with children — bathroom breaks and time to run around a little need to be accounted for in your driving plans.

Some Important Travel “Don’ts”

Along with these “to-dos”, there are some important things to remember NOT to do when traveling with your pet. Keep these important health and safety “don’ts” in mind as you travel:

Don’t sedate your pet. It may seem like a good idea to keep them calm, especially on a longer trip, but sedatives can increase the risk for cardiac or respiratory problems and regulation – particularly during air travel with changes in altitude and pressure.
Don’t leave your pet alone in a vehicle. (ever.) If you are going to a rest area, take turns staying with your dog while others use the facilities. Never leave your pet in a vehicle alone, especially in extreme temperatures. An open window is often not enough to cool off (and leaves your pet at risk of jumping out) and leaving the vehicle running can be a theft risk.
Don’t get too adventurous with food. Be sure to either pack or account for purchasing more of your pet’s usual food. It may be tempting to share the local “treats” with your pet, especially if they are joining you at pet-friendly restaurants, but remember that too much change in diet can lead to upset stomach and diarrhea.

The Sad Facts About Lost Pets

In today’s connected world, we see posts on social media about missing dogs and cats all too often. Sadly, many are never reunited with the humans that love them. Unfortunately — whether it’s due to a broken fence, gate or door left open, or even a natural disaster — one in three pets will go missing at some point in their lifetime.

Only 22% of dogs without microchips taken in by animal shelters are reunited with their families . Even more alarming, only 2% of un-microchipped cats taken to shelters find their families again.

Microchipped Pets Get Home More Often

In contrast, over half of dogs and nearly 40% of cats that go missing with a microchip in place are reunited with their families, a staggering statistic in favor of “chipping.” These numbers could be much higher.

Most of the time, when microchipped pets are not reunited, it is due to outdated or incorrect owner information in the microchip registry. (It is your responsibility to ensure your phone number and address are current in the microchip database. This is usually as simple as logging into a website.)

What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a tiny piece of electronics encased in a glass capsule no bigger than a grain of rice. When a special scanner is passed the chip, the chip transmits an identification number to the scanner.

This number is tied to the owner’s information, which can be found via database search tools available to veterinarians and shelters.

Are Microchips Safe? Do They Hurt?

Implanting a microchip is a simple procedure your vet can perform during a regular office visit. It is not that different from giving an immunization. The chip is tiny, and as with any injection, your pet will feel a “pinch” at first, and otherwise, it’s painless.

Millions of chips have been implanted in animals in the past 20 years. The biggest complication recorded is “migration” of the device — where it has moved from its initial placement site. The latest research shows placement area matters, so newer implants are less likely to migrate. Other complications have been swelling in the area and infection, but these problems are very rare. The benefits of having a chip far outweigh the risk.

What Do I Need to Do to Get My Pet Microchipped?

The microchip placement process is very quick and easy and can be done at a regular office. If you adopted your pet from a rescue or animal shelter, they may already be chipped. Just as with humans, good nutrition and exercise are key to keeping your dog healthy and happy. And just as with human nutrition, the internet is teeming with information, reviews, and advice that can be overwhelming.

You’ll find yourself weeding through advertisements masked as advice, supplement companies trying to sell the next cure-all, and plenty of make-at-home advice. Some of this information is helpful, but some can be so poorly balanced that it may even harm your dog.

So, how do you know what’s best for your furry friend? Today, we’ll discuss some tips for dog nutrition that will keep your barking buddy healthy:

Feed High Quality Food

It’s one of the biggest debates you see in the pet food world: Canned food vs. dry, commercial vs. home prepared. Both wet, canned food and dry, kibble-style food have their advantages.

Canned food can have a higher percentage of protein , but it also spoils if left out too long, and can contribute to dental problems due to its’ soft, no-chewing-necessary form. Dry food is more convenient, less expensive overall, and can help keep teeth cleaner with each crunch. However, it can also contain more fillers, may not have as much protein as wet food, and the low moisture content means your dog will need to drink more water.

Most dogs will thrive on dry food, but some pickier eaters and those with specific dietary needs will need canned. Another popular feeding option is home-prepared food. Keep in mind that a high quality commercial pet food has science and research on it’s side, and is a sure safe bet for Copper’s health.

Homemade food is a viable option if your dog has severe allergies or other medical needs that require specific ratios or easy digestibility. If you are unsure about which type of food would be best for your dog, ask the veterinarian.

Switching food? Take it slow.

When you are switching food brands or even “flavors,” you’ll want to transition slowly to the new food, not just abruptly start a fresh new bag or can. Starting a new food can cause stomach upset and diarrhea.

Mix the new food in with the old food, starting with about 25% of the new food mixed with the old for a few days, then 50/50 old and new, and transition over the course of several days to even up to two weeks to the new food.

Slow it Down

If Barkley seems like he is inhaling his food faster than a vacuum cleaner, you may want to take some steps to slow him down. Eating too fast can cause your dog to swallow air, which can lead to a potentially deadly condition called gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV).

Scattering food across the floor or patio, folding the kibble into a towel for them to “hunt” through, or using a slow feeder bowl or puzzle feeder can help.

Don’t Overfeed

Sure, Jim’s big brown beggin’ eyes are sweet, but giving in to his snack desires too often can lead to too much Jim around the middle. Obesity is just as much an epidemic in dogs as it is in humans.

Be sure you are feeding the right amount of food. Most brands offer a feeding chart on the bag based on weight. Of course, if you have questions regarding how much to feed, consult Dr. Brian Barron . Keep treats as special “sometimes” rewards, and when training, account for the additional treat volume when feeding their regular meals. If you feel that you dog is packing on the pounds, discuss weight control food options with your veterinarian.

Beware of harmful human foods

Many “human” foods are fine to share with your dog, in fact some trainers use cheese, hot dogs, and chicken liver pieces as “high value” rewards, but be aware that not everything we eat is safe for your dog.

Some foods can simply give them an upset stomach and may cause vomiting and diarrhea, such as tree nuts, dairy in large quantities, onions, and garlic. Other people foods can make them extremely sick and even cause life threatening conditions and should be avoided at all costs. These include chocolate, grapes. alcohol, and the natural sweetener Xylitol.

The main takeaway here is that you should feed your dog a high quality diet, with moderate amounts of good quality treats, and be aware of any changes in their eating habits, weight, or behavior.

Behind the Operating Room Doors let Dr. Barron show off our new state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgery facilities as he “operated” on stuffed animals! And, the Kids’ Corner was the perfect spot to keep the little ones busy with decorating Christmas ornaments that they could take home for their trees.

The Humane Society of Pulaski County’s mobile adoption unit and Friends of the Animal Village were also on hand with adoptable pets, and we’re delighted to report that several went home to new families!

New Puppy? Here’s How To Keep Your House Clean

Crate training is a great way to make sure that when you go out, your puppy not only feels safe, but also won’t poop or pee in the house. There are many different ways you can potty train your pup — consulting your vet is a good start. You’ll have to find the method that works for you and your dog.

Just remember, the best way to avoid accidents is to take your puppy out frequently, avoid leaving the dog alone to wander the house freely, and, if necessary, keep your puppy off the carpeted areas of your home. That will make any messes much easier to clean up.

Shedding

Whether this is a concern for you depends on your dog’s breed. Some dogs have hair instead of fur, which means they don’t shed much at all.

If your dog has fur, remember that the best way to keep pet fur at a minimum is to sweep and vacuum multiple times each week. Brushing and baths can help with shedding, but talk to your vet about the frequency with which you should do so.

Floors and Furniture

You’ll be training your puppy to do a lot of things in his or her first year of life. Sit, shake, come, and stay are just a few of the basic commands. Training your puppy to stay off the furniture is a good idea too. You’ll want to cuddle them all of the time, but ensure that your dog understands that they should only sit on the couch or bed when they’re asked.

Do not let your puppy have free range of your furniture. Make sure they have a comfortable bed of their own for sleeping and relaxing. If you do choose to invite them on your bed or the furniture, you might have a designated blanket for them to lay on. This will help them learn that if they see the blanket, that’s where they should be.

When your pup comes in and out of the house, there will be dirt, mud, and other grime on their paws. Teaching your puppy to wait by the door while you wipe their paws off is a good habit that help you avoid mopping the floors daily.

How To Clean Puppy Accidents On Carpet

Even if you take all the precautions above, there will be accidents. A shoe or sock might not make it, a kid’s toy might be mistaken for a puppy’s toy, but your floors are likely to take the brunt of it.

Don’t worry. In most cases, you’ll probably get to the accident pretty quickly. As long as you take your time and clean it properly, you can make sure it’s not a permanent part of your floor. Here’s the best way to clean up puppy accidents on your carpet.

Blot the Spot

Blot out as much of the spot as you can. If you do not take the time to blot, you’ll just push the spot down further into the carpet as you clean it. If the spot infiltrates the carpet pad, you won’t be able to get it out.

Pet Insurance

For many pet owners, pet insurance is the most practical and affordable way to have peace of mind when it comes to managing pet care costs. Paying a small monthly fee will keep you from worrying about the “what ifs” and unexpected illnesses and injuries that may happen to anyone’s pet.

Like most insurance, monthly premiums vary depending on certain factors but most policies range from $30 – $50 monthly.

7 Common Things that Lead to Accidental Poisoning in Pets

We all want our pets to live long happy and healthy lives, but unfortunately, there are several things in our homes that can lead to accidental poisoning in our pets. Awareness is the key to preventing accidental poisoning emergencies.

What may be good for humans may not always be good for your animals when it comes to food and medicine. A general rule of thumb is that if it is bad for your child, it’s bad for your pet. In honor of the National Poison Prevention Week (March 18th-24th), we’ll show you 7 different groups of toxins that you should avoid exposing to or giving your pet:

1. Household Products

Unsurprisingly, most common household products that are harmful to people to ingest are also bad for your pets. Antifreeze, paint thinner, pool chemicals, and common cleaners like bleach and drain cleaner are considered toxic and can result in stomach, respiratory problems, and renal failure.

A good way to prevent an accidental poisoning is to keep these household products out of the reach of your pets. Keep the toxic products out-of-sight in closed storage or place them high on shelves to avoid accidental spillage. Just as you would child-proof any potential household danger, you should pet-proof your house as well.

2. Human Medications

While most human prescription medications are life-savers for people with medical conditions, even a small dose can be potentially fatal for our pets. Some of the more harmful medications include:

Antidepressants
Blood pressure medications
Prescription anti-inflammatory and pain medications

Over-the-counter medications can also present an accidental poisoning hazard for pets. Pain medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen. In fact, a single 200-milligram ibuprofen tablet can be toxic for most small or mid-sized pets.

Remember to always consult your veterinarian about giving your pet any kind of medication even if it is over-the-counter and designed for the pet. Just like humans, pets can overdose or have unintended side effects from using even prescribed veterinary drugs. Some of the more easily overdosed medications include painkillers and de-wormers, so be sure to always administer the veterinarian-recommended dosage.

3. Human Food

We all love to treat our furry friends to a treat now and then, but not all treats are created equal. Many foods that are safe for humans are actually poisonous for our pets. Dogs are often in the spotlight since nearly 91% of calls to the Pet Poison Hotline involve dogs. Some of the foods to avoid accidental poisoning in dogs include:

Alcohol
Avocado
Caffeine
Chocolate
Grapes and Raisins
Macadamia Nuts
Onion and Garlic
Xylitol (often found in a surprising amount of foods )

Many of the same foods can be toxic to cats as well . Since cats tend to be smaller than most dog breeds they are more susceptible to fatal accidental poisoning from even a small amount of human food.

If you ever have any questions about what human food you can and cannot feed your pet, consult your veterinarian. In order to be safe, only feed your pet food and diets made specifically for your pet.

4. Rodenticides

Rat poison and other rodent poisons can cause accidental poisoning when ingested by your pets. Symptoms of this type of poisoning often do not present themselves until several days after ingestion. If you suspect your pet to have consumed rodenticides or eaten a poisoned rodent, you should take your pet ASAP to your emergency veterinarian.

In order to avoid accidental poisoning from rodenticides, be sure to keep the poison out of the reach of your pet, avoid setting traps near any pet common areas, and alert your neighbors when you set any traps.

5. Flea and Tick Products

These products may be helpful for preventing flea and tick infestations, but they can accidentally poison your pet if not used carefully. Often the problem involves your pet eating one of these products or a small pet receiving more of the product than prescribed. Always talk with your veterinarian about how much you should give your pet even if it is an over-the-counter flea and tick product designed for your pet. Oftentimes veterinarians can prescribe your pet flea and tick medication that is not only more effective but would be administered at a safe dosage for your pet.

6. Plants

One of the most overlooked ways a pet can be accidentally poisoned is by plants. House and garden plants were originally taken from natural environments where they employ chemicals and toxins for self-defense. Some plants that can present dangers to both cats and dogs include:

Azaleas
Daffodils (bulbs)
Lilies
Rhododendrons
Sago Palms (seeds)
Tulips (bulbs)

What if you have one of these plants in or around your house? For dogs, simply putting the plants out of reach will likely eliminate the problem. For cats, it can a little trickier since they like to climb things. We recommend avoiding having any type of toxic plant in a cat household, especially lilies since they can cause severe liver damage with only a couple bites.

7. Lawn and Garden Products

Are you landscaping or fertilizing your yard? Be sure to keep your pets away from the lawn or garden since many of these products can cause accidental poisoning if ingested. Once the products have dissipated within a week or two, then you should be able to let your pet run around in the affected area. Also, avoid allowing your dog to roll in fertilizer mainly because it smells and no one likes a stinky dog!

What to Do If Your Pet Suffers Accidental Poisoning

Stay calm and act fast – Although most toxins absorb quickly, if you act swiftly you can potentially prevent damage by taking your pet to the local emergency veterinarian.
Safely remove the toxin – Be sure to remove any more of the toxin from the pet’s reach so they cannot ingest any more of the toxin.
Contact your veterinarian immediately – During regular hours, bring your pet into SRVC. However, after hours you can either bring your pet to the local emergency clinic or call the main poison hotlines:

One of the best ways to teach a child about pet care is to include them in the adoption process. Your child will see that adopting a pet is not something to take lightly and it allows the child to meet the pet before taking them home. Empower your child with information about the adoption process and also try to give your pet some breathing room when they first arrive at home.

If you are adopting a cat or dog, it is important to consider the breed. While every cat or dog has a different personality, some breeds are more conducive to family life. Dog breeds like Golden Retrievers , Labrador Retrievers , Beagles , Boxers , and Terriers are good examples of family-friendly dogs. Pet Care at Ages 5 and below

During this age range, it is important to model positive behavior in order to show children how to be kind and respectful towards the pet. Children at this age tend to be grabby, excitable, and all of the things most pets would prefer to avoid.

Teach children that it’s not OK to pull on tails, pick them up without an adult, play with them roughly, or play with them while the pet is eating. Animals have feelings too! Animals cannot speak as we can, but they have feelings that we should try to understand so they can be happy and healthy. It’s critical that you teach the pet that it’s not OK to defend their food by biting or being aggressive. Food guarding can be a major problem that can lead to bites, especially with young dogs.

Children at this age also are not mature enough to take care of a pet on their own. Therefore, you should include the children in pet care rituals such as housetraining, grooming, and leash-walking. These rituals teach your child the necessary steps to owning a pet responsibly. We recommend not giving small pets, such as hamsters or guinea pigs, to children in this age range. While a cat or dog can survive a small mishap, our experience shows that small pets usually are not so lucky.

Pet Care at Ages 6 to 11

While the children may not be able to fully take care of the pet at this age, they can still help teach tricks and commands. Children can even start taking dogs on walks with parental supervision. Even better, they can start picking up poop or cleaning pet cages so you don’t have to anymore! This is a vital time where you can help children understand the basic needs of the pet by learning the names and functions of pet care supplies .

Another tip for this age range is to establish clear boundaries for the children and pets. Pets need quiet time too. A child’s enthusiasm may overwhelm the pet and also act as a huge distraction from things like schoolwork or sleeping. For your sanity as a parent, it is recommended you try to limit the number of nights your child sleeps with pets like cats or dogs.

Children can be expected to take care of small pets and not have any accidents in this age range. In fact, small pets are a great way to introduce your child to the responsibility of pet ownership. Small pets tend to require less maintenance than cats or dogs, and they can usually be placed in a child’s room without too many problems.

Pet Care at Ages 12+

This age range is when those early lessons about kindness and responsibility will start paying off. Children this age are often more responsible and understand the pet care needed to keep your pet happy and healthy. For example, taking your child with you during routine vet visits demonstrates that pets need regular healthcare just like humans. This can help your child feel more responsible for the pet’s care and health.

Important Information from Your Little Rock Veterinarian about Canine Influenza Outbreak

Canine influenza (CI), or dog flu, is a highly contagious viral infection that is considered to be a Type A influenza virus. At present, two strains of canine influenza virus have been identified in the United States: H3N8 and H3N2.

Influenza viruses can quickly change and give rise to new strains that can infect different species. Both strains of canine influenza identified in the U.S. can be traced to influenza strains known to infect species other than dogs., but at some point, these viruses acquired the ability to infect dogs and be transmitted from dog to dog.

Canine H3N8 influenza was first identified in Florida in 2004 in racing greyhounds. It is thought this strain developed from an equine H3N8 influenza strain that jumped from horses to dogs. Since being detected in 2004, canine H3N8 influenza has been identified in dogs in most U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

Canine H3N2 influenza was first identified in the United States in March 2015 following an outbreak of respiratory illness in dogs in the Chicago area. Prior to this outbreak, reports of canine H3N2 influenza virus were restricted to South Korea, China and Thailand. It was initially identified in dogs in Asia in 2006-2007 and likely arose through the direct transfer of an avian influenza virus – possibly from among viruses circulating in live bird markets – to dogs.

As of May, 30 states have reported H3N2 infections and 42 (including Arkansas) have reported H3N8 cases.

These cases are primarily associated with movement between AKC dog shows, but have spilled over into pet dogs, and there is major concern the outbreak will continue via AKC shows. NOTE: Last weekend’s AKC show scheduled in Texarkana, AR was canceled as a precautionary measure.

Get Your Dog Flu Vaccine at Your Favorite Little Rock Veterinarian

The most important step to prevention is to vaccinate dogs against the canine influenza viruses, so please call us to schedule an appointment. Just like human flu vaccines, the H3N2 CIV vaccine may not completely prevent infection but will make it less likely. Additionally, if a vaccinated dog does get infected, the disease is likely to be mild and of shorter duration. The vaccine can also protect against pneumonia.

Canine influenza is not currently a reportable disease in Arkansas. However, the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission has broad authority to respond to animal disease outbreaks including quarantine and additional actions if deemed necessary by the State Veterinarian.

This digital X-ray machine system enables low-dose radiation image capture without sacrificing clear, high-quality diagnostic images. Reduction in radiation exposure is critically important to the health and well-being of your pets and our veterinary professionals.

The system provides clear digital images, which improves our ability to see both dense anatomy and fine anatomical structures. The ImageVue DR50 system increases the sensitivity and sharpness of the image with a much lower dose of radiation than a conventional X-ray machine, and your pet’s X-rays take only a few seconds.

Little Rock Veterinary Digital Radiography

Digital radiography uses an electronic sensor instead of X-ray film to produce an image. Unlike old X-ray machines, which required a darkroom, chemicals and manually filed plastic film, digital radiography enables us to see the images immediately, saving time and getting your pets treated more quickly and back home where they belong! This image can also be viewed and stored on a computer and is easily shared online with consulting specialists.

Digital radiography is excellent for monitoring the healing progress in a broken bone or after an orthopedic repair. Additionally, many pet diseases alter the size, shape, or position of internal organs, and digital x-rays are a vital diagnostic tool in the identification of conditions such as:

You and Your Pet: What to do During a Natural Disaster

As a pet owner, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your pets are included in any type of emergency plan for your family in the event of a natural disaster. In Little Rock, the most likely natural disasters include tornadoes, floods, and ice storms. But in other parts of the country, as we’ve all seen in the news, hurricanes have had a devastating impact on people and animals alike.

These disasters can happen without warning, so it’s important to be prepared ahead of time.

Tips to Protect Your Pet

Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and tags with up-to-date contact information.
Microchip your pet. This is the best way to help ensure that you and your pet are reunited if you get separated. Be sure to register the chip with the manufacturer and keep your contact information up to date.
Have a pet carrier for each pet (write your pet’s name, your name and contact information on each carrier).
Keep a leash and/or carrier near your exit door.
If you don’t have a car, make arrangements with neighbors or family and friends. Also contact your city officials to ask about emergency transportation options.
Decide where you and your pets are going to stay. You will have two options, sheltering in place or sheltering somewhere away from home if you are evacuated.

Sheltering in Place

When sheltering at home with your pet, make sure the room chosen is pet-friendly. An interior room with few or no windows is recommended. Be sure to close off small areas where small animals could get stuck.

Sheltering during an evacuation

After the recent hurricanes, we saw many heartbreaking photos of pets who had to be rescued. Unfortunately, most official emergency management shelters do not permit pets unless they are qualified service animals. The ASPCA is helping to rescue pets, and they’re accepting donations to help defray their costs.

If you find that you need accommodations:

Contact local veterinary clinics, boarding facilities, and animal shelters to see if they will take your pets until the most immediate danger has passed.
Contact family or friends outside the evacuation area and make arrangements with them to take in your pets.
Contact a pet-friendly hotel, especially along evacuation routes. Little Rock has many pet-friendly hotels , some of which allow pets to stay without a fee.

Prepare a Pet Disaster Kit

Many of us have emergency kits for ourselves, but sometimes fail to make sure we have a disaster kit for our pets, so evacuation will go smoothly for everyone. Ask us for help in putting it together. The Centers for Disease Control has put together a list to get you started. Some examples of what to include are:

Food (in airtight waterproof containers or cans) and enough water for at least two weeks for each pet
Food and water bowls and a manual can opener
For cats: litter box and litter
For dogs: plastic bags for poop
Clean-up items for bathroom accidents (paper towels, plastic trash bags, bleach-containing cleaning agent)
Medications for at least two weeks, along with any treats used to give the medications and pharmacy contact for refills
Medical records
Current vaccination record
A record of your pet’s microchip number
For cats, most recent FeLV/FIV test result or vaccination date
Summary of pertinent medical history; ask us for a copy
Leashes or harnesses
Carrier or cage that is large enough for your pet to stand comfortably and turn around
Pet toys and bed (familiar items to help the pet feel more comfortable)
A handout with identifying information in the event your pet is lost
Current photo of pet
Owner contact information (cell phone, work phone, home phone)
Contact information of a close relative or friend,
Documents, medications, and food should be stored in waterproof containers

None of us wants to think about another natural disaster occurring, but by having a plan in place, as well as a comprehensive pet evacuation kit, we’ll be prepared if and when the time comes.

We’re able to do this event a couple of times per year thanks to our partners at Bass Pro Shops and at Friends of the Animal Village .

CPR for Your Dogs from Your Little Rock Veterinarian

If your dog becomes unconscious, respiratory arrest may occur, and usually occurs before cardiac arrest. The heart my continue to beat for several minutes after the breathing stops. Artificial respiration, or rescue breathing, must begin immediately to save your dog’s life. If the heart stops, chest compressions must be given right away to keep the blood pumping. Artificial respiration and chest compressions given together are call cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR.

Artificial Respiration for Dogs

If your dog has gone into respiratory arrest, begin artificial respiration immediately.

Lay your dog on his side on a flat surface.
Be sure your dog has stopped breathing: watch for the rise and fall of the chest, feel for breath on your hand, look at the gums – they will turn blue for lack of oxygen.
Check the airway – it must be clear. Extend the head and neck. Open the mouth and look for a foreign object. If an object is blocking the airway, grab the tongue and pull it outward. If this does not dislodge the object, use your fingers, pliers, or tongs to grasp it. If the object cannot be reached or pulled out, use the Heimlich Maneuver. Do not mistake the small bones in the throat for a foreign object.
Once the airway is clear, begin rescue breathing.
With your dog on his side, life the chin to straighten out his throat.
Use one hand to grasp the muzzle and hold the mouth shut.
Put your mouth completely over the nose and blow gently; the chest should expand. Blow just enough to move his chest (blow harder for large dogs, gently for cats and small dogs).
Wait for the air to leave the lungs before breathing again.
Continue this, giving 20 breaths per minute (one breath every three seconds), until your dog breathes on his own or as long as the heart beats.
Continue to monitor the heartbeat.

CPR for Dogs

If your dog’s heart has stopped beating, CPR must begin immediately. It is best to have two people performing CPR – one continuing artificial respiration while the other does chest compressions. Follow the instructions for artificial respiration, alternating with chest compressions. For two people performing CPR, alternate one breath with three compressions. For one person performing CPR, alternate one breath with five compressions.

For Small Dogs (under 30 pounds)

Lay your dog on her side on a flat surface.
Place the palm of your hand on the rib cage over the heart. Place your other hand on top of the first. (For puppies and kittens, put your thumb on one side of the chest and the rest of your fingers on the other side.)
Compress the chest about one inch. Squeeze and release rhythmically at a rate of 80 to 100 compressions per minute.

For Medium & Large Dogs (over 30 pounds)

Lay your dog on her side on a flat surface.
Place one hand on top of the other over the widest portion of the rib cage, not over the heart.
Keeping your arms straight, push down on the rib cage. Compress the chest 1/4 of its width. Squeeze and release rhythmically at a rate of 80 compressions per minute.
Continue CPR until your dog breathes on his own and has a steady heartbeat.

Paws on the Runway

A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to sponsor this year’s Paws on the Runway, a canine fashion show put on by CARE Inc.

The annual event draws hundreds of people each year for food, drinks, a silent auction, live music and a hilarious canine fashion show. CARE also brings in adoptable dogs for the guests to meet.

The doggy fashion show is always the highlight of the event. Each year, local celebrities and well-known faces accompany their dogs in strutting their stuff down the runway for a good cause. Our very own head veterinarian Dr. Brian Barron walked his dog Stella down the runway!

We loved supporting CARE at the silent auction with our donation of this dog bed and gift basket!

This year, some great gifts were donated for the silent auction, including our gift basket and dog bed. All the proceeds from the event go to CARE to help them fund their work in our community.

CARE is a non-profit animal welfare corporation that protects animals in control facilities from euthanasia. Their purpose is also to spay and neuter homeless animals in hopes of decreasing the number of dogs and cats out on the streets.

This year, the ninth year, it was held in honor of Lyndae Sain Allison and her many contributions to the animal welfare community. We are so honored to have been apart of Paws on the Runway and are looking forward to next year!

CPR Training

We want all our visitors (furry or not) to be safe while at our clinic. Recently, we brought Dr. Karen Konarski-Hart in to update our staff about what to do if a guest requires CPR.

The staff attended three-hour large group training in our clinic after hours. All of our vets and vet techs were required to be there. Dr. Konarski-Hart brought in CPR dummies to practice on and everyone completed a few minutes of CPR chest compressions.

We want our entire staff to know what to do in case of emergency in the clinic. CPR training will be done regularly to keep our vets knowledgeable about the changes that occur to CPR protocol.

Dr. Konarski-Hart offers CPR classes for both large groups and individuals. She is knowledgeable about the frequent changes that occur to CPR protocol and will update us whenever those changes occur so that our visitors have the best care possible.

10 Practical Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe from Fire

With summer coming and vacations, activities and the constant hum of everyday life kicking in it is often easy to overlook some important safety aspects in your home. Here at Shackleford Road Veterinary Clinic in Little Rock, we know that your pet is part of your family. Naturally you want to keep them as safe as possible. It’s also important to minimize the risk of your furry friend accidentally starting a fire in your home. So here are 10 practical things you can do to keep your pets safe.

10 Tips for Pet Fire Safety

Pet-proof your home. Just as you would baby-proof if you had a new baby, you should remove all potential hazards to make your home safe for your furry friend. According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, about half a million pets are affected by fires in the home every year so it’s vital that you take action to reduce the risks now.
Never leave your pet alone near an open flame. It just takes one wag of a tail or swipe of a paw to lead to major problems. If possible, remove open flames completely. Try using flameless battery-operated candles instead to create mood lighting without the fire risk.
If your pet can reach the counter tops, either by jumping up or by standing on its hind legs, you need to make all stove knobs safe. They can so easily be nudged by a curious pet and cause a fire. Consider getting knob covers to stop this from happening.
Don’t leave glass water bowls out on wooden decks in the sunshine. The hot sunrays can actually ignite the wood through the glass and cause fires. Instead, use stainless steel or ceramic bowls for your pets’ drinking water.
Does your pet just love to chew? Keep an eye on them and do regular checks around your home to ensure your animal hasn’t gnawed their way through any loose electrical wires.
If you can, install pet doors to give your pets an accessible escape route. If you have to keep your animal confined, keep them in an area near the front door so they can be easily found by firefighters.
Display a pet rescue alert sticker in your front window. This will let any emergency services staff entering your home know that your pet could be in there in need of help. Ensure your pet has ID with up-to-date contact information or get your furry pal micro-chipped. This is vital in case you get separated during an emergency. We’ve micro-chipped hundreds of animals and we’re happy to do this for your pets!
Think ahead and have a safe location planned where you can take your pet after a fire.
Prepare a pet survival kit in a portable case that you can quickly grab in the event of an emergency. It should include enough supplies to last 7 days. Here are some ideas for what you might pack:

Medical records for your pet and any medications they may need

National Microchipping Month

June is national Adopt-A-Cat month! Cat adoption is very important during the summer. Spring is “kitten season,” which means your local shelter now has plenty of cute, adoptable kittens in addition to those laid-back adult cats they already had. If the kittens or cats aren’t adopted, your local shelter can get overcrowded.

This month, we want to share some information about adopting local cats so you can make an educated decision before you adopt. Here are five things to think about before you adopt a cat:

Be prepared for a long-term commitment . Cats can live up to 20 years if they are well cared for. Make sure you are prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership. Are you willing to change your cat’s litter box for the next 20 years? Can you afford to buy monthly food and occasional grooming for your cat, as well as toys and scratching posts? Are you willing to do what it takes to keep your cat healthy with vaccinations and vet bills?
Make sure you’re getting the right cat for you . Each cat has its own specific personality, but in general, cats are known for being low-energy in their adult years. Try to find a cat whose personality meshes with yours. If you want a playmate, get a cat with a lot of energy. If you’re more interested in a cuddly friend, maybe look for a cat who likes people and is laid-back.
Prep your home for your new feline friend . Obviously, you will want to train your new cat, but be prepared for your cat to train you too. After your cat gets comfortable in your home, you will quickly learn that you can no longer leave food out on your counters. Too much change too quickly will make your cat feel unsafe, which can bring out their mean, defensive side.
Consider taking home two cats instead of one . Cats are social animals and need mental and physical stimulation. If you spend most of your day at work or away from home, it can be unhealthy for one cat to be alone for that long. If you adopt two cats, they can provide exercise and play for each other, and make better, happier pets in the long run.

8 Ways to Keep Pesky Fleas and Ticks Away From Your Pets

If you’ve been in Arkansas for a summer, you know that with the arrival of warm, humid weather some other “friends” also arrive. While summer means sunshine and cookouts, it also brings bothersome fleas and ticks attaching themselves to your beloved pet. May has been National Dog Month so it’s a great time to think about how to keep your pooch flea free.

8 Easy Steps For Flea and Tick Prevention

Keep your home as clean as you can. Change your bedding frequently and vacuum your floors and furniture thoroughly. Use a new vacuum cleaner dustbag for each use to prevent flea eggs and larvae developing. After treating a flea infestation, you should immediately clean your entire house to stop the critters coming back.
Keep your yard in check too. Discourage ticks from your yard, by keeping your lawn mowed, pruning your bushes, and removing any fallen leaves.
Get your pet kitted out with a flea collar to repel and kill fleas. It’s best to check with your vet before buying a flea collar to make sure that you’re getting one that works and isn’t harmful to your pet. Ensure the collar is fitted firmly to your pet’s neck so that it comes in direct contact with their skin. Adjust it until you can only fit two fingers underneath and trim any excess collar to stop your pet chewing on it.
Buy a flea comb and comb your pet’s fur regularly. A tight-toothed comb can be used to remove fleas and their eggs as they grip firmly to your pet’s hair and fur. Have a bucket of warm water next to you during combing time so you can instantly drown any fleas you find.
Give your pet a flea bath. A simple bath of lukewarm water and pet-friendly soap or shampoo can be effective in keeping fleas at bay or dealing with a minor infestation. For a stronger treatment, you can buy medicated flea shampoos from your vet.
Ask your vet about spot-on treatments. These are medications which can be applied directly to your pet’s skin to kill fleas across its entire body. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends using flea treatments like this every month as a preventative method, even if your pet doesn’t currently have fleas. Read all labels thoroughly and seek advice from your vet to make sure you’re using the best treatment for your pet.
Try oral flea treatments. If you have a serious flea situation you may want to combine spot-on and oral flea treatments for the most effective results. Seek advice from your vet about the best flea treatment for your pet. Remember that treatments can vary depending on the species and what might be effective for your dog could be toxic for your cat.
You can also try powder and spray treatments. These are available cheaply but will need to be reapplied more frequently than spot-on and oral treatments. You should also take great care not to get them near the eyes, mouth and nose as they can be harmful to animals and humans if ingested.

The old adage of measuring time in dog years really is true. Our pets age in a similar fashion as humans, but at a far more rapid rate. Typically, dogs and cats are considered senior when they’re about seven years old. Of course, size and breed have a lot of bearing on the aging process, and cats generally live longer than dogs. But, just like humans, our pets tend to require more care as they age. This is the time in their lives when they’re more prone to developing health issues such as arthritis, cancer, kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, thyroid conditions, and diabetes.

Of course, we don’t want to think about the time when our pets become incapacitated or ill as they age, but it’s something we need to pay attention to. It’s important we do what we can to help ensure that our senior pets lives are as comfortable as possible. After all, isn’t that what we want for ourselves and our human family members?

While aging itself is not a disease, according to Vetstreet , there are a few symptoms you should keep an eye on when it comes to caring for your older pet:

Changes in weight (especially weight loss)
Decreased appetite or lack of appetite
Increased water consumption
Changes in urine or stool patterns
New lumps, bumps or swellings — or changes in existing ones
Persistent cough
Difficulty breathing or breathing heavily or rapidly at rest
Sudden collapse or weakness
Difficulty climbing stairs or jumping
Foul mouth odor or drooling
Seizure or convulsions
Disorientation

Insurance for pets is an often-overlooked benefit, but it’s exactly the backup you need when your pet requires costly medical treatment. Choosing the best pet insurance for your beloved pet can be a challenge, but here is some information to make your decision easier.

Which Route Should You Take?
When determining the best way to handle large medical expenses when they occur, you can take one of three actions:

Take out a pet insurance policy for financial security and peace of mind.
Put money aside every month in case of emergencies. However, if your pet requires major surgery or extended treatment, you may not have enough saved up to cover all of the expenses.
Finance your pet’s care through CareCredit , which allows you to pay expenses over time.
None of the above. By not having a financial plan in the event of a major medical event, you’ll either have to find the money somewhere or forego treatment altogether.

October is National Adopt-a-Dog® Month!

Over the years, dogs have become more than just pets or working animals, they’re now bona fide family members. They sport Razorback T-shirts on game days, go on family vacations, and you’ll even see them hanging out with their humans on restaurant patios that welcome them. But now, more than ever, many dogs find themselves in a position of needing a new family to love. Whether they’re rescues from a puppy mill; they were found wandering the street; or their previous owner had to surrender them, the perfect dog for you is likely available for immediate adoption in the Little Rock area.

In 1981, the American Humane Association named October as Adopt-a-Dog ^® month to encourage us humans to save the lives of homeless dogs. We don’t have an exact number of how many dogs need a new place to live, but so far in 2016, the Humane Society of Pulaski County has taken in more than 400 dogs. A no-kill shelter, they’ve been fortunate to have adopted out nearly that same number.

If adopting is in your future, where can you go to find your new furry friend? Check out a few of these local resources:

Adoption fees generally range from $25 to $250 depending on the facility, and many times spaying or neutering is included. Also, keep in mind that adult and senior dogs need love, too. Puppies are adorable so they’re most often adopted quickly, but older and special needs dogs would likely be ecstatic to spend their remaining years living comfortably with a loving family. When you adopt, be sure to bring your pet to us for a wellness exam to make sure they’re in excellent health.

Mark your calendars now because we don’t want you to miss the PuppyUp Walk November 5 ^th at MacArthur Park! PuppyUp is a

two-mile walk created to help promote awareness of canine cancer and fundraise for cancer research to benefit both pets and people.

Pre-registration will be going on through November 3 ^rd for $20. After the 3 ^rd , registration increases to $25. Kids under 14 can participate
for free.

Onsite registration begins at 11:00 a.m., and the walk starts at 1:00 p.m. (Check below for the complete schedule). Since 2010, the PuppyUp Foundation has funded $400,000 in cancer research in the areas of osteosarcoma, breast and bladder cancer, as well as mast cell tumors. Because dogs and cats age six to ten times faster than humans, it’s important that we humans ensure their health and well-being is looked after because they sure can’t do it on their own. October is National Pet Wellness Month , so this is the perfect time to provide our top five guidelines to keep your dog or cat in tip-top shape!

1. Semi-Annual Vet Visits

The American Veterinary Medicine Association (AMVA) recommends twice-yearly visits for a thorough check-up. Because our pets age more quickly than we do, health issues can show up fast. An exam every six months provides the opportunity for early detection, treatment, or prevention of potentially life-threatening conditions.

2. Dental Hygiene

According to the American Veterinary Dental College , periodontal (or gum) disease is the most common clinical condition occurring in adult dogs and cats, and is entirely preventable . The disorder develops after food and bacteria collect along the gum line and form plaque in a pet’s mouth. Just like in humans, a build-up of this oral bacteria can lead to all sorts of health issues for your pet, including heart valve problems and kidney infections. You know the familiar refrain (Heck, you probably even used it yourself back in the day): “But, moooooom! Everyone else has a puppy [kitty] [goldfish] [ferret]!” Or even better, “Dad! Look what followed me home! Can we keep him???” It seems like kids and pets (more often than not) go together like peanut butter and jelly, so adopting a new family member may feel like an easy choice. But, it’s really important to ensure that you don’t enter into pet parenthood with little forethought. You need to take a lot of factors into consideration before you make the leap into being owned by a pet, and the Little Rock veterinarians at Shackleford Road Veterinary Clinic can help with some advice.

What’s your style?

One of the main things you need to think about when deciding to welcome a pet into your home is your family’s lifestyle. This checklist might be helpful as you go through the pros and cons of adoption:

How many kids do you have?
How old are your kids?
Do you already have a pet?

What’s the size of your home compared to the pet you’d like to adopt?

On the Road with Fido and Fluffy – Traveling with Pets

Traveling with your pets can be a fun endeavor, especially with the rising popularity of pet-friendly restaurants and hotels. But, much like packing up the kids to go on vacation, there are a few specific details you need to iron out before you go.

What to Pack

Here’s a brief checklist of items you should remember to bring along whether you’re traveling by land or air:

Your pet’s food
Food and water dishes
Bedding
Litter and litter box
Leash, collar and tags
Grooming supplies
A first-aid kit (for dogs or cats)
Any necessary medications.

And if you’re on a road trip, always have a container of drinking water with you!

Pet Health Requirements

When traveling with your pet, you might encounter animal health requirements specific to your destination. As soon as you know your travel details, it’s important to contact your veterinarian to assist with the pet travel process. Factors to consider may include meeting time frames for obtaining a health certificate, updating vaccinations , diagnostic testing, or administration of medications/ treatments. Regulations for traveling in the U.S. are not stringent; however, it’s always a good idea to have your pet’s health records on-hand.

Traveling with your pet to a foreign country, however, can be a little…hairy! For example, if you plan to travel to Australia with your pup, you must follow 20 steps before the government will permit entry! You definitely don’t want to wait until the last minute.

Airplane Travel with your Dog or Cat

Some airlines allow small pets to travel in the cabin with you as your carry-on item while others require pets to travel in the cargo area below. BringFido has an excellent list detailing regulations and fees for most major airlines.

Some general rules for flying with your pet. Make sure you:

Use a carrier that is approved by your airline.
Have your pet’s vaccinations updated before you leave.
Ensure your pet is microchipped in the event he’s lost.

Road Tripping with your Furry Friends

When you take a car trip with your cat or dog, the Humane Society recommends that each (especially cats who are more prone to wandering) be crated. They also say that dog restraints or seat belts are useful for preventing your dog from roaming around the car and being a distraction; however, they haven’t reliably been shown to protect dogs in the event of a crash.

Be sure to also stop for plenty of bathroom and exercise breaks, but always keep a collar and tags on your dog just in case he gets loose. It’s always best when traveling with pets to have another two-legged traveler so one of you can stay in the vehicle if you need to take a rest stop. If you’re solo, make it quick and leave windows open in warm weather.

And, before you go, be sure to search the internet for pet friendly places that welcome your animals. Most places in the U.S. that are pet friendly only welcome dogs, so search for “dog friendly restaurant” and the city you’re visiting.
